Reduce Plastic Bag (RPB)

An ELF Foundation Environmental Sustainability Initiative

Overview

The Reduce Plastic Bag (RPB) program is an environmental sustainability initiative of the ELF Foundation, led by Michelle Nse, a dedicated environmental advocate. RPB is designed to promote responsible plastic use by encouraging shoppers and businesses to reduce the number of plastic bags used during everyday purchases.

At ELF Foundation, we believe that small, consistent actions at the community level can lead to significant global environmental impact. By simply using fewer plastic bags, we can reduce pollution, lower carbon emissions, and contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.

Our Objective

The RPB program is focused on:

  • Reducing plastic bag consumption in local communities
  • Promoting environmentally responsible shopping habits
  • Educating the public on proper plastic disposal and recycling
  • Supporting businesses in lowering operational costs associated with plastic bags
  • Contributing to global efforts in combating climate change and pollution

How the Program Works.

Community Store Campaigns

RPB organizes outreach campaigns in selected community stores where trained volunteers:

  • Assist customers in bagging their purchased items efficiently
  • Demonstrate how to use fewer plastic bags without inconvenience
  • Encourage mindful consumption practices

Public Awareness & Education

During these engagements, volunteers educate shoppers on:

  • The environmental impact of excessive plastic use
  • Proper disposal and recycling methods
  • Sustainable alternatives and responsible usage habits

Practical Demonstration Approach

Rather than just awareness, RPB focuses on action-based learning. Customers experience firsthand how simple adjustments in bagging can significantly reduce plastic waste.

Our Impact

RPB has already demonstrated measurable success:

  • Katy, Texas: Achieved a 7% reduction in plastic bag usage across participating stores
  • Helped businesses reduce operational costs tied to plastic bag consumption
  • Increased awareness among shoppers on sustainable practices

Successfully expanded campaigns to San Francisco, California, showing scalability across diverse communities

Our Volunteers

RPB is powered by a vibrant and committed volunteer network, including:

  • Environmental advocates and adult supervisors
  • High school students fulfilling community service goals
  • College students passionate about sustainability and climate action

Through volunteering, participants gain real-world experience in environmental advocacy, leadership, and community engagement

Why This Matters

Plastic pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges globally. RPB directly addresses:

  • Excessive plastic waste in landfills and oceans
  • Environmental degradation and wildlife harm
  • Carbon emissions from plastic production and disposal

By targeting behavior at the point of use, RPB creates immediate and scalable impact
